Samsung has announced that its foundry division has successfully fabricated its first ARM-based chip using a 20nm process and High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) technology. The chip maker was working with several partners to validate a new design infrastructure for building 20nm system-on-chip (SoC) components. Details are includes in a process design kit, which is geared for customers designing chips using such technology.
The partner companies were said to be working to overcome design challenges surrounding energy-efficient chips built using the 20nm process. Samsung suggests the new technology will enable companies to develop new device structures, advanced routing rules, and other advancements.
The test chip was designed around ARM's Cortex-M0, the company's smallest and most energy-efficient processor. The prototype also included technology such as Cadence Design Systems' unified digital flow, and Synopsys' Galaxy Implementation Platform.
Samsung has yet to announce a time-frame for large-scale manufacturing using the 20nm process technology.
